SNTutoring! (Year-Round Virtual Program- 1:1 customized subject/activity)

Is your special needs child having too much alone time? Maybe having tutors or playmates will help your child to be gradually more social and active in addition to learning things that interest him/her?
FCSN youth volunteers can work with your special needs child 1:1 online on any academic subjects or non-academic activities of your choice. Furthermore, with our support, you can work with the tutor to select/design materials customized to your child’s functioning level, interest, and needs. To assure the quality of the tutoring sessions, an experienced supervisor will routinely review parents’ feedback and tutors’ after-class-reports, then take actions as needed.
This is an on-going program, you can register at any time. If you are interested in learning more about this program, please click HERE to visit SNTutoring website.

Beginning Biology By Med-ucate

In these classes, we will teach students a variety of basic biology concepts. Each class will cover a different topic in biology, like cells, different types of plants and animals, and even basic genetics. Join us for a tour of biology using fun, interactive, and hands-on activities. Through building cell models, drawing activities, fun review games, and more, we’ll lay the foundation for students to learn more about all the wonderful life around them.

Med-ucate is a team at SPARK,, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization created and run by high school students. Our goal at SPARK is to bridge the gap of educational inequality in underserved communities by providing individuals with access to free, student-led classes in a variety of subjects. The Med-ucate program’s mission is to educate individuals about the importance of self-care and well-being in order to prevent the development of later conditions. Currently, we are working with libraries, homeless shelter, schools in Africa, and special needs organizations, including FCSN where we teach anatomy at the afterschool program.”

Introduction to Scratch

[FREE Trial Class on 10/16, 4-4:45 PM]

This class is taught by Aarav Sharma, a Freshman at Archbishop Mitty High School. Aarav’s favorite subjects are Math, Computer Science & Physics. He has learnt many computer languages like Scratch, Java, C, C++, Python. Aarav opened his non-profit organization named The Coder Squad, https://thecodersquad.com, whose mission is to teach coding from all backgrounds at an early age.

In this computer science course, we will focus on one of the most interactive and fun computer science languages: Scratch. We will learn how to create art and make cool games on Scratch. In addition, we will play fun games such as Blooket with our students that will help them to further understand the lesson. I will work with these kids and guide them step-by-step so that they learn and enjoy Scratch. To end each class, we will create and continue on mini-Scratch projects so that the students can express their creativity in the form of code. Finally, towards the end of each semester, students will finish their mini projects and present them to class to showcase their understanding of Scratch. Every participant will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course.

Rain and Shine Storytime Session III

In this interactive class, we combine reading, music, and games to help children with special needs develop and improve their social-emotional skills. Our stories and activities aim to help them understand, recognize, and properly express a wide range of emotions. We use well-known characters from popular movies and shows to personify each emotion. We also teach techniques that help children to manage their own feelings and exercise self-control. Our review kahoots at the end of each class keep students engaged and help them practice recognizing different feelings in people and reinforces the knowledge they just learned.

Some of the books and songs we will discuss are:

  • The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen and “Sad, Bad, Terrible Day” by The Learning Station
  • Is a Worry Worrying You? by Ferida Wolff and Harriet May Savitz and “Managing Worry” by Flocabulary
  • Angry Octopus by Lori Lite and “Grumpy as a Grizzly Bear” by StoryBots
  • Thundercake by Patricia Polacco and “Everything is Going to be Alright” by Super Simple Songs
Students from both the 1st and 2nd sessions were really enthusiastic and loved learning in the class. We are offering this course again with an expanded curriculum so old and new students can benefit from it.

Sunday Sports & Fitness Class

This class will be interactive and movement-based, meaning that students will engage in instructor-led physical activities to learn how to move their bodies to promote health, fitness, and strength! The goals of this class are to help students learn…

(1) HOW to exercise and be active, even if they’re stuck at home!
(2) WHY exercise is important and how the body responds to exercise

This class emphasizes learning through doing. In addition to talking about the science/benefits of fitness, Rachel will lead students through a fun, music-filled workout routine each class. Each workout that Rachel designs will have a fitness theme (e.g. cardio, core strength, mobility, etc.); whenever appropriate, she will accommodate each student’s varying physical needs and abilities.

Students will learn that fitness energizes the body and the mind, and that they can exercise anytime and anywhere. Sweating, breathing hard, and feeling the burn of muscles are part of what makes fitness challenging, beautiful, and fun!
