Is your special needs child having too much alone time? Maybe having tutors or playmates will help your child to be gradually more social and active in addition to learning things that interest him/her?
FCSN youth volunteers can work with your special needs child 1:1 online on any academic subjects or non-academic activities of your choice. Furthermore, with our support, you can work with the tutor to select/design materials customized to your child’s functioning level, interest, and needs. To assure the quality of the tutoring sessions, an experienced supervisor will routinely review parents’ feedback and tutors’ after-class-reports, then take actions as needed.

2022-2023 Language & Arts Class
In this language & arts course, we will focus on writing, grammar, and speech. In addition, we will read stories and play fun games with our students that will help them learn more vocabulary and practice their reading skills! The volunteers of this class will work with these kids every step of the way – focusing on what students need to improve on each week. To end each class, we will have fun arts and crafts that can give students a chance to express their creative side and end class with something fun! Finally, towards the end of each semester, students will work on a mini project that will show how much they have learned in this class!

2023 Spring – Intro to Spanish
Description:
This is an 8-week Intro to Spanish online course. The curriculum will include learning vocabulary, numbers, greetings, days and months of the year, and other key conversation skills in Spanish! Intermediate learners will expand their knowledge of speaking, spelling, and reading while continuing to develop their conversational skills. Aarav wants students to not only learn the Spanish language, but also love it. Every session includes an opportunity for dedicated attention with a focus on helping children grow in their Spanish language learning journey.
Every session will also contain basic Spanish-speaking practice. Kids who learn a new language early in life will have advantages later on, including having the skill of knowing a foreign language and gaining new associated cognitive abilities. At the end of each session, there will be a Booklet quiz and a short homework assignment.
About Aarav: Aarav is a sophomore at Archbishop Mitty High School. Spanish is one of his favorite subjects and has been learning Spanish since elementary school. Aarav is proficient in Spanish and has taken Spanish III in his sophomore year. He’s proficient in speaking and writing Spanish. He will be pursuing AP Spanish in Junior year of his high school. Intro to Python [Fall 2022]
Want to learn the basic programming language Python but don’t know where to go? Fear not! Our Intro to Python programming camp will allow students to learn the most popular programming language for software engineering, data science, machine learning and AI. This program is for beginners and aims to teach the fundamentals of Python. In addition to learning new concepts, we will play Blooket with our students to further understand the lesson in a fun and competitive way! I will work with these kids and guide them step-by-step so that they learn and enjoy Python. To end each class, we will create and continue on mini-Python projects so that the students can express their creativity through the form of code. Students start to learn core concepts of Python syntax, loops, data types, variables, and so much more! They will explore more advanced programing elements of Python such as dictionaries and files. Every participant will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course!

Discord is a messaging and digital platform designed for creating communities. Like we have an FCSN community, Discord can be used to unite everyone who is interested. Discord has many functions in which students can voice call, video call, text message each other and congregate in a social “server.” Our FCSN server will be a place where students can learn to socialize and learn their way around Discord, while also working together to play games, communicate, and build relationships. The Making Smart Purchases Workshop [Fall 2022]
The Making Smart Purchases Workshop is geared toward students who want to learn the basics of smart purchasing in the real world. The course will cover topics ranging from the basics of fractions and percentages to real-life sale applications. There will be plenty of interactive virtual games and work opportunities in class, like running a virtual lemonade stand. We will have class game days where students play Monopoly and learn about the applications of the board game in real-life real estate. We will wrap the course up with a market day where students will compile coupons and buy items on sale and map out their consumption. Students will finish the course equipped to make smart decisions when purchasing and with knowledge regarding discounts and coupons.
NOTE: Students are required to complete the final project (which should be done in class), and they must present a slideshow on the last day of class. Please make sure the student has PowerPoint or Google Slides ready to go.
Candace Tsay will be the instructor of this course, and here’s some background on her. She is a senior and goes to The King’s Academy. She loves film and business and can’t wait to teach the kids about the basics of business.
