Tennis Camp

This is a year-round camp designed to coach special-needs students of ages 7 and above basic tennis fundamentals and improve the techniques. They will be paired with 1-2 experienced tennis volunteers who will be their coaches and help them learn these fundamentals at the student’s own pace.

Sairisheeth Venkat is a junior at Mission San Jose High School and the founder of this tennis program. For the past 2 years, he has been a part of the FCSN family providing guitar lessons for a neurodiverse student. His experience from the sessions has inspired him to go into neurodiversity advocacy. He was able to start this tennis program as part of FCSN as tennis is something which he has been playing for 8 years and has much experience in. He wishes to bring the joy of tennis to as many neurodiverse individuals as possible through this program.

Kid & Teen Social Play Group [Spring 2023]

In this course, we will help kids and teens learn social skills that include:  communication, problem solving, perspective taking and teamwork.  They will also learn appropriate social interactions such as making requests, initiating interactions, sharing, exercising give and take (reciprocity), and turn taking.  It is a great way of motivating them to learn and to implement all the skills that working together needs.  Besides having fun, social skills help them in school and in life to develop a sense of self and positive social-emotional skills in their environment, be able to communicate, handle their emotions, show respect, and build friendships which can help them to do better in life, in the classroom and in the community.

Ms. Lyn will be the instructor again of the course.  She is currently an Instructional Assistant in training students from all disability categories including those with severe emotional behavioral disabilities for 12 years.  She has an ABA background for six years and she is also one of the teachers of FCSN’s After School Program for almost four years.  Her passion and professional experiences in working with students will contribute to the goals of providing students with a safe and positive learning environment.

Cartoon Character Drawing Class [Spring 2023]

Cartoon Character Drawing Class teaches how to draw one’s favorite cartoon characters with a set of simple steps, allowing students to bring their childhood dreams to life with a few strokes of the pencil on a sheet of white paper. Using different well-known shapes to block out the forms of the characters’ different sections and features, they are taught how to replicate the characters onto their paper in their own style. Once learned, the lessons can be brought outside the class, where students can draw their favorite cartoon characters on their own and increase their love of creating, or the magic of art.

Riley Xu will be the instructor of this course. She is currently a senior attending Crystal Springs Uplands School who loves playing basketball and making art. Her passion for art spreads wider than only drawing and painting; she enjoys a little bit of photography, filmmaking, embroidery, and cooking as well. Drawing cartoon characters was what made Riley fall in love with art, so she can’t wait to teach the kids to draw their own!

Woodwork and 3D Design & Printing Workshop [Spring 2023]

Woodworking and 3D Printing Classes
In the woodworking sessions, students will build a Mini-Wooden Riser and a Toolbox/Pencil Holder. They will learn about woodworking concepts such as grits of sandpapers, the use of glue with wood, types of screws and screwdrivers, and painting wood using acrylic paint. The students will work on sanding and fitting the wooden pieces together to create the objects and then paint the same. They will personalize the objects using stencils done on a Cricut machine.
In the 3D modeling and printing sessions, students will create several fun objects such as a personalized Keychain, Lithophane, 3D Jigsaw Puzzle, Customized Planetary Gearset, Toy Car, Dragon Eggs, etc. The students will learn about the different types of 3D printers, printer filaments and their uses, 3D modeling, slicing, bridging, and related software and basic use. There are a multitude of uses as well as fun things that can be accomplished with these techniques.
The objective is to give the students confidence and a sense of accomplishment from making the objects apart from learning woodworking skills and 3D modeling and 3D printing skills.
Ravi Uday Prabhune will be the instructor of this workshop. He is a maker at heart who loves hands-on creative activities such as woodworking and 3D modeling and printing. He has raised funds by selling his custom creations such as wooden low-slung tables and other items and used the proceeds to donate 3D-printed assistive devices to special needs students in the US and Africa. Recently Ravi received a utility patent grant for the design of an eco-friendly and convenient pooper scooper; he used 3D printing for design modeling and printing the prototypes of the scooper. Among Ravi’s other achievements, he has been a Finalist in The Amazing Maker Awards 2022 International competition based on creative & technical contribution and social impact.

Science Workshops by Science for the Bay – Spring 2023

Our class will use hands-on experiments, discussions, and games to make sure that students learn in a fun and interesting way. Some of the experiments we plan to perform and explore this spring are:

  • Instant ice
  • Alka Seltzer Rocket
  • Elephant Toothpaste

Science for the Bay is a non-profit organization that focuses on bringing interactive science-based education to the next generation and to under-developed areas around the world.
