Workplace giving is an easy way to make tax-deductible donations to charities through payroll contributions. By giving through recurring or one-time payroll deductions, your donation is automatically deducted from paycheck. There are no extra fees, and you do not need an acknowledgment from the charity in order to claim your tax deduction.

Contact your company’s HR Department to learn more about payroll deduction.

Many of our sponsors participate in their company gift matching’s program, in which the employer matches its’ employees’ charitable contributions by donating an equal amount.

Here’s how it works:

  • Contact your HR Office / Payroll Department to find out about “Matching Gift” policy.
  • Request a “Matching Gift Form” from your company
  • Complete the employee portion of the form and submit the form to FCSN with your gift.
  • FCSN will verify and complete your form and return it to the company.

Note: Some companies process Matching Gifts electronically and may have specific instructions to complete the process in that manner.

Donating publicly-traded stock may provide better tax benefits than a traditional donation. Your charitable income tax deduction is equal to the fair market value of the stock and you avoid paying capital gains tax on any increase in the current value over the original cost of the stock. You may also save on brokerage fees because you are transferring ownership rather than selling the stock.

For more information on how to transfer appreciated securities, please contact Accounting Department at 510-739-6900 ext. 3302 or accounting@fcsn1996.org.

If you are 70½ or older, a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA may allow you to support Friends of Children with Special Needs while meeting your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) and avoiding additional taxable income.

Up to $108,000 per person in 2025 may be donated directly from your IRA to FCSN.

FCSN has established a vehicle donation program with an outside corporation to accept cars, boats, or RVs: Car Program LLC.

For tax purposes, you can claim tax deduction from either the sale price of the donated vehicle or $500, whichever is larger, in your income tax return. For example, in the 28% tax bracket, a sale price of $4800 will give you a tax credit of $1344. Therefore, you donation is equal to selling your car at a value of $1344. Check with your tax advisor to see how this tax deduction can benefit you.

Car Program handles the title transfer requirements and will provide you with a tax deductible donation receipt when they pick up your car.

Find the steps to donate your car or call the car donation program at 1-800-240-0160.
